The common name for roof rats is indeed the black rat. This species, scientifically known as Rattus rattus, is characterized by its agile nature, slender body, and large ears, which allow it to navigate and inhabit areas such as attics, roofs, and upper levels of buildings. Roof rats are particularly associated with urban environments and are adept climbers, which contributes to their preference for elevated nesting sites.

In contrast, the house rat and Norway rat refer to different species entirely. The house rat, or Rattus norvegicus, is more commonly found in buildings and does not have the same climbing ability as roof rats. The Norway rat is typically larger and is known for burrowing. The tree rat could refer to various rodent species that live in trees, but it is not a commonly accepted name for roof rats. Understanding these distinctions helps identify the habits and habitats of different rat species, important factors when managing pest populations.
